The pledge was the idea of Kyle Bailey, a former state legislator, that surfaced during the final weeks of the presidential election in 2024; perhaps the most divisive and polarizing national election since the U.S. Civil War.
Kyle was looking for a way that friends, family members, neighbors and former colleagues in the legislature could reflect on the bonds that unite us as Americans and reassure one another that the vast majority of us are still committed to the same principles of freedom and justice for all.
The result was the Americans for Freedom pledge.
You can sign the pledge online here. Be sure to invite your friends and family members to join you; even your uncle whose opinions make Thanksgiving Dinner a little uncomfortable at times.
You are encouraged to talk about the pledge with those who you invite to sign. Discuss with them what it means to be an American. Talk about the values and principles that guide America.
You might be surprised to find that most of your neighbors, family members, and co-workers aren’t stupid liberals or heartless conservatives; many of them truly care about our country and have the best of intentions. You might even have something to learn from their perspective.
Regardless, you will sleep better at night knowing that, pundits, partisan agendas, and political personalities aside, we are still one nation, united by fundamental truths, with the shared values that can carry us through even the most challenging of times.
